PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Nowadays a conventional PCs or laptops are some times operated and controlled along with their applications with the cordless mouse or a mouse is wired to the system that requires manual operations with human intervention to operate the computer. This process needs the presence of a person to operate it.

The main goal of this project is to control computers with a TV remote instead of cordless mouse. So when you are watching a movie or listening songs on your PC, you need not have to get up from your seat to change the volume or to change the track; you can simply use your TV remote to control it.

The project uses a PIC microcontroller wherein an IR receiver such as a TSOP is connected to the microcontroller for receiving the commands from the TV remote to control it. This system is interfaced to the PC using RS-232 cable with a GUI for the interactive actions from the operator.

The computer is controlled by a TV remote, which sends commands (coded infrared data) from the transmitter located in it. The data received at the computer end is recognized by software: PC control through a COM port to perform required operations.  Pre-defined numbers on the TV remote are used to perform up - down, right - left cursor movement. The features like left-click and right-click of the mouse can also be performed with the TV remote.

This project in future can be enhanced by using Bluetooth or RF technology to overcome the traditional line of sight communication drawbacks of the infrared type.

A:  Distance supported by TV remote is about 10 feet.
Q:  Can this project be used for any Laptop or PC?
A:  This project can be used for any PC, but for a laptop, one needs a USB to DB9 converter.
Q:  What is the function of level shifter Max232?
A:  Max 232 is used to shift logic level from TTL to RS232 and vice-versa
