PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Space Vector PWM is a sophisticated technique for controlling AC motors by generating a fundamental sine wave that provides pure voltage to the motor with lower total harmonic distortion. This method overcomes the old technique SPWM to control an AC motor that has high-harmonic distortion due to the asymmetrical nature of the PWM switching characteristics. 

The proposed system uses a microcontroller of the 8051 family and a rectified-power supply. Inthis system, a MOSFET bank (inverter)  is used for developing a three-phase power to run the motor, which is interfaced to the microcontroller with the help of the opto-isolator and switch driver. The Opto-isolator is used for merging the isolating devices. A MOSFET driver is used to drive the MOSFETs. The snubber circuit limits switching transient, which is connected across the MOSFET.

In this system, DC supply is produced from the single-phase AC after rectification, and then isfed to the 3-phase inverter with 6 numbers of MOSFETs. For each phase, a pair of MOSFETare used, and, therefore,  three pairs of MOSFETs are switched at certain intervals of time for producing three-phase supply to control the speed of the motor. This circuit also gives light indication of any fault that occurs in the control circuit.

This project in future can be enhanced by using IGBT instead of MOSFET for high-voltage power operations. Speed control of the motor can also be achieved by V/F method.

NOTE: A 3-phase induction motor of 0.5HP or 1HP is required to see the output. The motor is not supplied along with the kit. However, it can be purchased atan extra cost.

Q:  Can one run single phase induction motor without capacitor?
A:  Model 240 is also available in single phase for Induction motor that requires no capacitor either in run or in start. The model develops 2 phases i.e. one out of phase by 90 degrees to the other which are then fed to 2 coils of the single phase Induction motor.
Q:  Which microcontroller is used in this project?
A:  A 40 pin microcontroller from 8051 family is used in this project.
Q:  What is SVPWM?
A:  SPWM or sine pulse width modulation is a type of pulse modulation wherein the triangular carrier signal is compared with the sinusoidal reference signal to generate the pulse modulated signals.
Q:  What is the rating of motor to be used in this project?
