PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This project is designed to detect a vehicle movement on road to switch on only a block of street lights that are ahead of the vehicle, and to switch off the glowing lights when the vehicle passes away from the lights. This will help to save electrical energy.

During night all the street lights on the roads remain on throughout the night, so a lot of energy gets wasted when there is no vehicle movement. This proposed system provides a solution for saving energy. This is achieved by sensing an approaching vehicle, and then switching on a block of street lights ahead of the vehicle. As the vehicle passes by, the trailing lights get switched off automatically. Thus, this system can save a lot of energy. So if there are no vehicles on the roads, then all the lights will remain off.

The IR Sensors that are placed on either side of the travelling way are used to sense the object's movement and send the logic commands to an AT89S52 series microcontroller to switch on or off the LEDs for a particular distance. Thus, this way of dynamically switching on and OFF the street lights helps in reducing the power consumption.

The power supply consists of a step-down transformer 230/12V, which steps down the voltage to 12V AC. This is converted to a DC using a Bridge rectifier. The ripples are removed using a capacitive filter, and it is then regulated to +5V using a voltage regulator 7805, which is required for the operation of the microcontroller and other components.

In future, this system can be heightened by using appropriate sensors for detecting the failed street light, and then sending an SMS to the control department via GSM modem for appropriate action.
