PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Nowadays traditionally high intensity discharge lamps (HID)  used for urban street lights on the highways remain on whole night. A lot of energy is wasted when there is no vehicle movement. This project is enhanced to detect the vehicle movement on the highways in order to switch on a block of street lights ahead of the vehicle moving towards them as well as to switch off the lights when the vehicle passes away using IR sensor technology to save the energy.

 As the intensity is not possible to be controlled for high intensity discharge (HID) lamp, LED lights are preferred for future lighting, because of their low energy consumption and long life. Moreover they are now fast replacing the conventional lights where the intensity control is possible by the pulse width modulation.

The proposed system uses a microcontroller of the PIC16F series family and a rectified power supply. In this system, a string of IR sensors is interfaced to the microcontroller with the help of  transistors wherein the sensors are used for detecting the vehicle movement. The LED lights are used for giving the illumination to the vehicles that all are connected to the microcontroller.

The IR sensors are placed on either side of the road to sense the vehicle movement and to send the logic commands to the microcontroller to switch on/off a set of LEDs.  The project operates in two modes:  complete off mode, and dim mode. If there is no vehicle on the highway, then all the lights remains off completely in the shutdown mode; and, in  dim mode – instead of completely shutting down – the lights remain on with  10% intensity of the maximum intensity of  light. Thus, this system dynamically changes the intensity of the lights to save a lot of energy.

This project in future can be implemented by using appropriate sensors to detect the failed street lights, and then to send an SMS to the control department with a GSM modem for appropriate action.
