PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Nowadays, numerous accidents are occurring frequently on the highways due to speed limit violations and, as a result, people are losing their lives. The existing system for the policemen, in order to detect rash driving, use a handheld radar gun to record a vehicle's speed. If the vehicle speed exceeds the speed limit, then they inform about such violations to the nearest police station for necessary action.

The currently existing systems are not being able to properly control the rash driving acts of the drivers, and thus are unable to avoid accidents. Therefore, in order to overcome this problem, we have developed a device to detect rash driving based on the time between two sensing devices placed which alerts traffic authorities if speed violations occur.

This proposed system uses a microcontroller of the 8051 family and a rectified power supply. In this system, the IR sensors are interfaced to the microcontroller for detecting vehicle's speed. A lamp is controlled by the relay mechanism, which is interfaced to the microcontroller. A buzzer is connected to the microcontroller as an alarming device. Speed limit is displayed on a 16*2 LCD, which is connected to the microcontroller.

Predetermined time limit is set by using timers and sensors at two different points with certain distance on the road between them for avehicle to cross these points. If a vehicle crosses this distance in less time than the predetermined fixed time limit, then an acknowledgement is sent to the traffic authorities by activating the buzzer and load. Such information is also displayed on the LCD by the microcontroller.

This concept can be extended in future by integrating a camera with this system, which can capture the image of the number plate of the vehicle and send that to the traffic authorities.

A:  A 40 pin 8051 microcontroller is used in this project.

A:  It’s pre-programmed and hence the speed limit cannot be adjusted.
