PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The main goal of this project is to implement an auto-intensity control of LED based street light system from solar energy for conserving the electrical power on the streetlight. As the traffic decreases slowly in late nights, the intensity is made to reduce progressively till morning to save energy, and thus, the street lights remains switch on at the dusk, and then switch off at the dawn, automatically. The process repeats every day.

The intensity is not possible to be controlled by traditional  high-intensity discharge (HID) lamp, which is used in urban street lights. LED lights are the future of lighting, because of their low energy consumption and long life. The conventional lights are now being replaced by the LED lights whose intensity control is possible by the pulse width modulation.

This proposed system uses a microcontroller of the 8051 family and a battery for power supply. In this project, a solar panel is used to charge the battery. The charge controller circuit is used to control the charging. The strings of LED are interfaced to the microcontroller with the help of MOSFET.

The intensity control of the LED light is possible by varying the duty cycle from a DC source. A programmable microcontroller is engaged to provide different intensities at different times of night by employing PWM technique. A charge controller is used to protect the battery from overload and also to provide deep discharge protection.

This project in future can be enhanced by integrating it with the LDR to follow the switching operation precisely.
