PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The main goal of the project is for protection of induction motor. The induction motor draws more current than its rated capacity during their starting condition which leads to damage of windings in the motor. In order to avoid this problem applying voltage gradually from low to high is followed for smooth start of induction motor.

The smooth starting of induction motor is achieved by the SCR firing angle control principle. This project consists of a two anti-parallel SCR’s connected in series with an induction motor to the mains supply. Opto-coupler is connected to trigger the back to back SCRs with isolation from the controlling section. During the start the firing angle is heavily delayed by receiving delayed triggering pulses from an operational amplifier. One op-amp operating in comparator mode develops zero voltage pulses to generate saw-tooth voltage waveforms. This waveform is further compared against a varying voltage by charging and discharging of the capacitor during start to develop delayed pulses for triggering the SCRs. A lamp is provided in this project instead of an induction motor for demonstration purposes.

Further the project can be enhanced by using six SCRs ie, two connected in back to back for each phase for a three phase induction motor.

A:  A 100 W bulb is used to demonstrate as Linear or resistive load

A:  In order to visualize the soft start it is better to use a bulb
