PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The main intention of this project is to control an AC induction motor using the Sinusoidal PWM technique. It is very popular and simple technique in which a triangular carrier wave is modulated by a sine wave. The switching points of the power devices in the inverter can be determined by the points of intersection. 

The proposed system uses a microcontroller of the 8051 family and a rectified power supply. In this system, the MOSFET bank (inverter) is used for developing a three-phase power to run the motor, which is interfaced to the microcontroller with the help of the opto-isolators and switch driver. The Opto-isolator is used for merging the isolating devices. The MOSFET driver is used to provide drive to the MOSFETs. The snubber circuit limits the switching transients, which is connected across the MOSFET.

In this system, a DC supply is produced from the single phase AC after rectification, and thenit is fedto the 3-phase inverter bridge with 6 numbers of MOSFETs. For each phase, a pairof MOSFET isused, and therefore, three pairs of MOSFETs are switched at certain intervals of time for producinga three-phase supply to run the motor. This circuit also gives light indication of any fault that occurs in the control circuit.

This project in futurecan be enhanced by following ‘Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation Technique’ for higher efficiency and low harmonic distortion of motors.

NOTE: A 3-phase induction motor of 0.5HP or 1HP is required to see the output. The motor is not supplied along with the kit. However, it can be purchased at an extra cost.
