PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The main intention of this project is to provide security over a certain area in an organization to allow only the authenticated persons with a smart card to have access of controlling a device or an access to the area.

This system works based on the 8051 family microcontroller and uses a rectifier for power source. A smartcard reader is interfaced to the microcontroller through a level-shifter and serial cable for reading the details of an authorized person from the smart card. The load is controlled by the relay, which is connected to the microcontroller through a relay driver. In this project, a lamp is used in place of the load for demonstration purpose only. A 16*2 LCD is interfaced to the microcontroller to display the information.

When the smartcard is inserted into the smartcard reader, then the data on the card is compared with the data in the microcontroller (interfaced to the reader) to identify the user. If the card is unauthorized, then the load remains off, which indicates that the user is not authorized to access a particular area or device, and the respective information is displayed on the LCD display.

This project in future can be enhanced by integrating a GSM modem such that any attempt to access it in an unauthorized way will be denied by alerting and prompting an SMS, which is sent to the concerned department for necessary action.
