PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The main intention of this project is to design an access control system that allows only authorized persons to enter a particular area by establishing a RFID system, which authorize persons with unique tags to access the secured area. This system provides security to organizations for protecting physical as well as intellectual property.

This project uses a microcontroller of the PIC16f series family and a rectified-power supply. The RFID reader is interface to the microcontroller for reading the data card information.  A relay is controlled by the relay driver IC for switching the loads. A lamp is connected to the relay contacts in series with the mains supply for indication purposes. A 16*2 LCD display is used for displaying the valid information on the LCD.

This tag acts as a transmitter that contains an integrated circuit for storing and processing the information. Once a person shows the RFID tag to the card reader, the card reader reads the information from the card, and then compares it with the predefined-stored data in the microcontroller with the stored data If matched the loads are turned on, which  are driven by  relay.  The LCD displays the message as “person is authorized” or else as “unauthorized person.”

The project in future can be implemented by interfacing it with GSM technology. Any attempt for unauthorized access can be intimated to the security personnel through an SMS.

Q:  What is RFID?
A:  RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification Device. It is an identification system wherein the information about any object or person is transferred wirelessly to the reader.
Q:  What is RFID card?
A:  RFID card is a device with a coil and a chip. While placed on a RFID reader the card gets induced power from the reader and then the data present in the card is serially transmitted.
Q:  What is the relay type used?
A:  12V single contact relay is used
Q:  Can one use any other load, instead of the lamp?
A:  Yes, any load limited to 200W can be used
