PROJECT DESCRIPTION

White Light Emitting Diodes (LED) have replaced HID lamps in street lighting system now as it is easy to vary their  illumination level.It is not possible to control the intensity of the high intensity discharge (HID) lamp which is used in urban street lights. LED lights are the future of lighting, because of their low energy consumption and long life; and hence they are fast replacing the conventional lights. In LEDs, intensity control is possible by the pulse width modulation technique.

The main goal of this project is to implement an auto intensity control of the LED-based street light system using the Raspberry Pi board. As the traffic decreases slowly in late nights, the intensity is allowed to reduce progressively till morning to save energy, and thus, and also the street lights switchon at the dusk, and then switchoffat the dawn, automatically. This process repeats every day.

This proposed system uses aRaspberry Pi board and a rectified power supply. A strings of LEDs are interfacedto the Raspberry Pi boardwith the help of a MOSFET device.

The intensity control of the LED light is possible by varying the duty cycles from a DC source. A programmed Raspberry Pi board is engaged to provide different intensities at the different times of the night by using PWM technique.

This project in future can be enhanced by integrating a LDR to follow the switching operation precisely.
