PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This project is designed to control a railway level-crossing gate through an SMS by the station master or driver. This system uses a GSM wireless module for opening and closing the level-crossing gate remotely.

Railway safety is the most crucial aspect of railways all over the world. The cheapest mode of transportation is railways, and therefore, accidents are likely to happen due to careless manual operations. The proposed system is enhanced to prevent accidents at the unmanned level crossings and to provide much needed safety.

This system uses a microcontroller of the 8051 family and a rectified power supply. In this system, a GSM modem is connected to the microcontroller through a level shifter IC for sending the data. The railway gate status is displayed on the LCD display which is interfaced to the microcontroller. A motor is connected to the microcontroller with the help of a driver IC for opening and closing the railway gate.

This allows the station master or driver to send a command from the mobile phone to the GSM modem attached to this system and the GSM modem sends it to the microcontroller. The microcontroller compares this data with the predefined data and if it matches, then the microcontroller generates corresponding signals to the motor driver to operate the motor. The desired number to which the communication takes place is user programmable by a missed call to the gate GSM interfaced microcontroller in select countries.

The scope of this project in future can be enhanced by incorporating a provision for sending an acknowledgement to the sender about the status of the gate via SMS.
