PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The main objective of this project is to calculate the electrical energy required by a load through push-button switches by entering the unit cost relation as per the energy tarrif. With this system, one can avoid hours of waiting for a load survey assistant.

The energy audit involves survey and analysis of energy consumption of electrical loads in either domestic sector or industrial environment. Nowadays the unit cost of electricity is very high, and therefore, it necessitates one to know whether the energy of a particular load, or instrument is efficient or not. The proposed system is used to examine the energy of electrical loads.

The proposed system uses an 8051 family of microcontroller and a rectified power supply. Here, four push-button switches are interfaced to the microcontroller for providing the energy tariff information. A 16*2 LCD display is connected to the microcontroller for displaying the information.

This system is connected to the energy meter with a load through Opto-coupler IC. The microcontroller reads the pulses from the energy meter for finding the energy consumption of the electrical loads. When a user gives the unit price and prescribed time of the load through a push- button switch to the microcontroller, then it calculates according to the program and displays the relevant energy consumed and cost information on the LCD display.

The project in future can be implemented by using a GSM modem by interfacing it to the device for remote monitoring of the data over GSM network via SMS. Even load control can also be achieved through SMS.

Q:  Which microcontroller is used in this project?
A:  A 40 pin microcontroller from 8051 family is used in this project.
Q:  How is the energy tariff calculated?
A:  By using digital pulses from energy meter, an appropriate program calculates the pulses and converts it in energy units and then calculates the per unit cost.
Q:  Which energy meter used?
A:  230VAC, 5-20A Digital meter is used
Q:  Can I replace lamp with any other load?
A:  Yes the lamp can be replaced with any other load.
