PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The main objective of this project is to develop a PC-based electrical-load-control system to control the electrical appliances by using a personal computer (PC).

The conventional operating switches or devices need human involvement to operate the electrical loads. This proposed system is enhanced to control the home appliances that are confined to one place, with a computer.

The proposed system uses a microcontroller of the 8051 family and a rectified power supply. The loads are controlled by the relay driver which is interfaced to the microcontroller. This system is connected to the personal computer through a serial cable with a level-shifter IC.Once the controlling commands are sent from the personal computer (PC) to the microcontroller through a HyperTerminal with a level-shifter IC, then the microcontroller receives this data and compares it with the predefined data, and then generates the corresponding signals to activate the relay driver to switch on or off the electrical loads.

This project in future can be enhanced by implementing a GUI-based control panel on the PC with appropriate embedded software. The intensity control can also be incorporated using power electronics devices.

Note: The project works only on operating systems with a hyper terminal (E.g. Windows XP) and the computer must have a RS232 serial port.

Q:  Is it possible to replace lamps with any domestic load?
A:  Yes, domestic loads can be used, but only with wattage up to 200W.
Q:  Which microcontroller is used in this project?
A:  A 40 pin 8051 microcontroller is used in this project.
Q:  How to control the loads?
A:  By connecting the device to PC serial port, one can control the loads using hyper terminal of that PC
