PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The main objective of this project is to design a robot that automaticallydetects the obstacles and avoids accidentson its paththrough a pair of ultrasonic sensor.

The proposed system uses a microcontroller of the 8051family and a battery for power supply. In this system,the ultrasonic sensor pair  is connected to the microcontroller to sense the obstacles ahead on its path. The motors are controlled by the motor driver IC, which is interfaced to the microcontroller.

Whenever the robot goes on the desired path, the ultrasonic sensor transmits the ultrasonic waves continuously from its sensor head. Whenever an obstacle comes aheadof it, the ultrasonic waves get reflected back from theobstacle or object and the information pertaining to it is passed to the microcontroller. The microcontroller controls the motors left, right, back, and front, based on theultrasonic signals received. In order to control the speed of each motor, the pulse width modulation technique is used (PWM).

This concept in future can be extended in such a way that if a destination is fed to the robot, the robot could map a whole terrain and reach its destination by deciding a suitable path and avoiding obstacles.
