PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The LED lights are the future of lighting, because of their low energy consumption and long life they are fast replacing the conventional lights.  Normally the LEDs are operated with DC voltage between 1.5 to 3v. The proposed system is designed to drive a string of LEDs directly through the AC main supply by using a combination of capacitor and resistor drop.

The Project uses a capacitor and resistor in series; the capacitor is used as a voltage limiter, whereas the resistor is the current limiter. A string of LEDs is connected to the circuit in series parallel combination with the help of the series capacitor. The diodes with a high PIV (1000V) are used to convert the AC to DC voltage, which is connected to the circuit from the mains supply.

The project uses a number of LEDs in series and parallel combination being fed from the 230V AC supply via series dropping element such as one capacitor and resistor. The back-to-back diodes are used for withstanding the high ac voltage, and its output drives the series of LEDs. The white LEDs are preferred to be used as they deliver bright light.

Q:  How are LEDs operated through AC mains?
A:  Using series capacitor drop and current limit resistor, a string of white LED's are made to operate at 230v AC.
