PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The main concept of the project is to develop an induction motor protection system for protecting the motors from any damages occurring from single phasing and over temperature conditions.

The induction motors are predominant in industrial applications. The motorruns on three phase supplyand an acceptable temperatureto maintain the loads at desired conditions.But; if any phase goes missing or there is increase in the temperature of thewindings it damages the motor. Thus, thisproject helps to provideprotection to the industrial motors by removing the power tothe motor immediately if any of the phases misses out of thethreephases, or if the temperature of the motor exceeds the threshold value.

The proposed system uses three-phase power supply where in three single-phase transformers are connected to it. The system has a set of op-amps used as comparatorsfor comparing input voltages. A thermistor is connected to the motor body to sense the temperature of the motor. The motor is operated by switching the main relay, which is operated byother set of relays by sensing single phasing and over temperature conditions.

The project in feature can be enhanced by using current sensors for overload protection and phase-sequence sensor for protecting the motor from applying wrong phase sequence.

Q:  What is the three phase induction motor rating to be used?
A:  Three phase induction motor can be used, but limited up to 1 HP only as it uses a relay of 6A contact rating only. For higher HP just use a contactor of appropriate rating. The 230 AC coil of the contactor is powered in series from one of the contacts of the relay.
