PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The main objective of this project is to develop a GSM-based monthly energy meter billing system for reading monthly energy consumption in units, and its cost from a remote location, and to send that data directly to an electricity department as well as to consumers through SMS.

Nowadays electricity cost is  high, and therefore, it becomes a necessity for the consumer to know how much electricity is being used by them, in order to control the electricity bill – that should come within their budget. In this proposed system, a consumer will get energy consumption data on a real-time basis on a LCD display. The same data is sent through GSM modem to the electricity department via SMS.

This system uses a microcontroller of the 8051 family and a rectified-power supply. Here the GSM modem connected to the microcontroller through a MAX-232 IC for sending the data. The energy consumption status is displayed on the LCD display, which is interfaced with the microcontroller. This system is connected to the energy meter with a load through Opto-coupler IC for isolating the loads from the microcontroller.

The microcontroller reads the pulses form the energy meter, and according to the program it calculates the energy consumption of the electrical loads in units and its cost. The consumer gets his energy consumption data on real time basis on a LCD display, whereas electricity department gets the reading information  through  SMS from a mobile SIM loaded with a  GSM modem  once the mobile number is stored in the microcontroller.

This project in future can be enhanced to control the electrical appliances remotely via SMS.
