PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The main goal of this project is to design a system capable of reading monthly energy consumption units of the energy meter from a remote location through GSM technology, and then forwarding that straight to an electricity department as well as to consumers, in addition to controlling the loads through SMS.

At present, electricity department sends employees to take meter reading every month, which is an expensive and time-consuming job. Thus, this project provides a convenient and efficient method to avoid this problem.

The proposed system uses a PIC16F series microcontroller and a rectified-power supply. In this system, a GSM modem is connected to a microcontroller through a level-shifter IC for communication. Relays are controlled by the relay-drive IC for switching the loads. The status can be displayed on the LCD interfaced to the microcontroller.

This system is connected to a digital energy meter with load through opto-coupler IC. The microcontroller reads the pulses from the energy meter to find the energy consumption of the electrical loads, and then sends it to the preprogrammed mobile number. This GSM modem is also capable of receiving the commands from the user phone to control the electrical loads.

The project in future could be implemented to interface it with a non-volatile memory IC like EEPROM along with a keypad, so that a user is allowed to change the mobile number as per the requirement.
