PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The main scope of this project is to provide a remote override facility for a density-based, dynamic-traffic-signal system. Traditionally traffic signal timings are changed automatically in  peak hours by sensing the traffic density at a junction.  In the event of any emergency, vehicles such as ambulance, fire brigade, etc., require top priority to cross signals; therefore, this system is enhanced by an RF remote override facility that helps override the set timing by immediately flashing a green signal in the desired direction of such vehicles while blocking the other lanes by flashing red signal for some time.

The proposed system is based on the 8051 microcontroller family. The project contains an IR transmitter and IR receiver that are mounted on the roads which are opposite to each other. The number of LED lights that are connected to the microcontroller represents traffic-light signals.

The IR system gets activated whenever any vehicle passes on the road between the IR transmitter and IR receiver. If any one of the way is blocked with a large number of vehicles, then this system changes the junction green signal timings automatically and thus avoids unnecessary waiting time at the junction. The density of the vehicles is measured in three zones: low, medium and high – according to which timings are allotted. Over and above that, signal override feature is activated by an RF remote transmitter operated from the user end.

This project can be further improved by synchronizing all the traffic junctions in the city by establishing a wired or wireless network. This synchronization will greatly help in reducing traffic congestion.
