Nowadays traffic controlling in the urban areas is becoming very difficult due to enormous increase in automobiles. So, in order to overcome this problem, we are presenting a better way to regulate vehicles in a crowd and at a junction, and to achieve this, there is less involvement of human being in the operation. In recent days wireless technologies have started changing the entire criteria of the appliance control system and are acting as a crucial prospect in automation.

The system contains IR transmitter and IR receiver which are mounted on either sides of a road. The IR system gets activated whenever any vehicle passes on the road between the IR transmitter and IR receiver. The signals from the IR receivers are then fed to the controller to follow the program with the time, as desired. All the sensors are interfaced with the microcontroller, which in turn controls the traffic signal system according to the density detected by the sensors. If the traffic density is high on a particular side, more time is given to that side. The sensors continuously keep sensing density on all sides, and a green signal is given to the side on a priority basis – like when the sensors detect high density. The side with the next priority level follows the first priority level, and so on. Junction timings allotted are fixed. The density of the vehicles is measured in three zones: low, medium, and high, based on which the timings are allotted accordingly.

The power supply consists of a step-down transformer 230/12V, which steps down the voltage to 12V AC. This is converted to a DC using a Bridge rectifier. The ripples are removed using a capacitive filter, and it is then regulated to +5V using a voltage regulator 7805, which is required for the operation of the microcontroller and other components.

In future, the system can be enriched by synchronizing all the traffic junctions in the city by establishing a network among them. The network can be wired or wireless. This synchronization will greatly help in reducing traffic congestion.

Q & A
Q:  Is this project for 4 way junction?
A:  Please note these are student level projects to understand the technology only and not designed for exact use off the shelf. In any case the other two sides would have the same circuit extended and the program just duplicated for that section. It makes no sense to get a repeat work for the sake of having it..The features desired by real use can be done but cost would be high enough beyond the affordability of an average student expenditure point of view. Therefore we have taken only one section consisting of 2 sides.
Q:  Is it possible to increase the distance and implement it directly on the road?
A:  Yes, with modification at user end, it is possible to increase the distance and implement it directly on the road.
Q:  What is the role of microcontroller in this project?
A:  The microcontroller is used to refer to the dynamic timing provided by crystal oscillation
Q:  How does it automatically sense the traffic?
A:  By IR sensor arrangement, the traffic can be automatically sensed.
