PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The main aim of the project is to control home appliances with landline phone from a remote location.

As usual, the conventional wall switches are located in different parts of the house, and such provisions create a need for any person to go there and press the switch to turn the loads on or off.Confinement of switches to conventional locations in the home creates difficulties for the elderly or physically handicapped people.Hence, this system is enhanced to control the home applications through a mobile phone by dialing the selected number for the corresponding load.

The proposed system is developed based on the IC technology and uses a rectified power supply for devices.In this project, the landline phone is attached to the circuit with the help of Opto-isolator. The DTMF decoder receives the commands from the user phone to develop digital output. Here,  number of flip-flops are used for storing the digital data from the DTMF decoder. 555 timers are used for generating the clock pulses. The relays are switched to turn the loads based on the flip-flop commands.

If a button is pressed to generate a corresponding tone on the user phone, the same tone is heard at the other end of the landline phone attached to the circuit, which operates the home appliances. This tone is called ‘dual tone multi frequency’ (DTMF) tone. The received tone is processed by the flip-flops with help of the DTMF decoder. The flip-flops take the decision for any given input and output wherein the home appliances such as fans, lights, refrigerator, etc., gets turned on or off.

The project in future can be extended by including a provision that gives an acknowledgement message to the user by a system with help of the GSM technology.
