PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The main aim of the project is to control the intensity and to reduce the wastage of electrical energy in the streetlight system by replacing the HID lamps with the White Light Emitting Diodes (LED). The main unit in this forecast to control the intensity is a microcontroller of the 8051 family that generates pulse –width-modulated signals that prompts a MOSFET to switch the LEDs accordingly to accomplish a preferred operation.

In the contemporary procedure, particularly the lighting up of highways is done through High Intensity Discharge lamps (HID), whose energy ingesting is elevated. Their intensity cannot be regulated according to the obligation. This can be overcome by alternative method of lighting system, i.e., by using LEDs. This system demonstrates the usage of the LEDs (light emitting diodes) as the light source and its variable intensity control, according to the requirement. LEDs consume less power and their lifetime is also more, as compared to the conventional HID lamps. The main features of this system are that it can control the intensity as per the requirement during non-peak hours, which is not feasible in HID lamps.

A bunch of LEDs are used to form a street light. Based on the PWM (Pulse width modulation) signals generated, the microcontroller contains programmable directives that control the intensity of the lights. As per the commands, the intensity of the lights remains high during the peak hours. As the traffic on the roads tends to decrease slowly in the late nights, the intensity also decreases progressively till morning. It gets completely shut down at morning 6, and again resumes at 6pm in the evening. The process is repeated.

This concept in future can be heightened by integrating it with the solar panel, as it converts the solar intensity into corresponding voltage, and this energy is feed up to highway lights.
